Artifacts from the South Pacific
Surprisingly, dolphin images are not common
in the South Pacific indigenous cultures.
This from the Solomon Islands was collected in the late 1800s.
An odd amalgam of fish and human,
this sculpture is unexplained in the literature I have been able to examine.
From Fiji, this strange creature seems to be both human and fish.
While the style of this is not typically South Seas,
it was collected there.
The half-dolphin, half-man Vatea of the South Pacific is atypical,
in that he is said to be divided lengthwise into his two aspects.
